Our Review: Dave Ramsey is one of America’s top home budgeting advisers. He has several books, runs classes, a home budgeting radio show, and even has his own Television Show. While The Total Money Makeover is not his first book, you don’t need to have read any other Dave Ramsey book to understand this one.

Dave was not always a money guy, In fact, he went bankrupt. He decided to change himself and focus on the basics. He famously declared after going bankrupt, “I did it my way, and my way wasn’t working.” He really wanted to be honest with himself, and he really wants you to be honest with yourself.

You can really tell while reading this book why he has become popular. He tells it like it is and gives straightforward advice. Plus he is not afraid to call ideas or ways people spend money “stupid”. In short, Dave is not afraid of stepping on people’s money spending ways, if he doesn’t agree with them.

He lays out his easy step by step guide to reaching your own money goals. However, sometimes it feels like he lacks some of the finer details, preferring to give you the big picture.

He has quotes throughout the book which give you small glimpses into his money ideas:

“Over 97% of people don’t systematically pay extra on their mortgage.”

“When your spouse gets the raise you are expecting, don’t raise your lifestyle with it. Save more! Invest more!”

“To make more money, you have to plan to make more money. Some people’s problem is income, not spending.”

The book is littered with interviews of people who have used Dave’s services in the past to turn their budgets around. They tell their own tale of money woes and then their newfound budgeting talents. Most of these stories are extremely inspirational. However, due to their being a lot of them they can get a bit boring.

The advice in the book is truly great. And anyone who reads this book, regardless of if you are Bill Gates or flat broke; you will be able to take something away from it to help your money situation.

But what kept striking me over and over again while reading is he uses general ideas to describe what to do. He doesn’t get down to the nitty gritty and tell you what you should be doing day-by-day or purchase by purchase. Had he included more of this, this book would have been rated the full five out of five stars. However, it still rates an extremely good four out of five.

Pros:

Very straight talk on what you should and should not do in your budget. Has lots of very inspirational stories from people who have turned their financial lives around. Adds a sense of humour, not only about the book, but about money in general. Talks very openly about his past and how he became bankrupt. (interesting)

Cons:

Does not tell you how to do it on a day-by-day basis. Only gives a general guide. Has too many inspirational interviews with people, can become a tad boring.

Later on in the day, the impression you are able to make will not necessarily be diluted by all the actors who have gone before you.

Remain professional and polite, even when you think no one is watching you. This means not causing any scenes besides the ones you are acting in. With so many people around, things can get hectic and at times confusing. So make sure you keep your ears and eyes open for any and all information the crew gives you. If there is literature or more detailed instructions handed out, find a seat and go through it. Chatting away with the other actors will not benefit your audition; maintaining your focus will.

You will have anything from a number of minutes to just seconds for your turn. This means you need to maximize each moment you have in the spotlight. Body posturing does come into play here, as it betrays the state of your inner emotions. If you are nervous or afraid, for example, your hands might shake, your shoulders may be bunched and your head will point down towards the floor - and the audition panel will be able to see it. To counter this, focus on adopting a confident posture no matter what you are feeling inside when your name is called, and you may end up fooling yourself into confidence as well as the members of your audience.

Confidence manifests in physical form through a head held high, a straight spine, and arms to the sides. Allowing yourself to focus outwardly on changing how you appear to feel is a lot easier than trying to build up your actual feelings of self-assurance on a moment’s notice - especially a moment so charged as the one when you take the stage front and center. Nevertheless, an open casting call does not have to be entirely work. Try to relax and have fun with it, and above all keep attending open calls to raise your skill level.

Once home, we spend days reading about all of the publishers to find EXACTLY what they’re looking for: fiction, non-fiction, poetry: (rhyming or non-rhyming), memoirs, essays, short story collections, screenplays, et al. Then we narrow that list to those who accept submissions without our need of an agent. (By the way, I’ve noticed this list shrinking with each new edition of Writer’s Market, no matter what the genre).

We study this shortened list to see whether they are accepting manuscript submissions in precisely what we write in the genre they accept(children, young adult, romance, fantasy, science fiction, western, erotica, religion, spiritual, new age).

Out of that group, then we have to find those who accept manuscripts NOW. Some only accept manuscripts during a specified reading period (only May 1 to July 1, for instance). The list is further narrowed down to find those that do not require “exclusive” submissions. (This means we cannot submit elsewhere, until we’ve heard back from them, either yea or nay). It has been my experience that publishers can take anywhere from three months to forever to notify you. So, you can see how an exclusive submission can inhibit your progress. You can’t send it to a second, until you hear back from the first… and fewer and fewer are even notifying you at all. Some even put a caveat in their Writers Digest listing, stating that if you haven’t heard from them within a specified length of time, to consider your manuscript rejected.

The final list we come up with is:

* Publishers who accept your genre. * Publishers who accept what you write in that genre. * Publishers accepting now. * Publishers that accept multiple submissions. * Publishers that don’t require an agent’s involvement.

Our job now is to study each of our final list of publishers and carefully follow their submission guidelines. We have to follow the instructions exactly! After all the hard work and time spent, we don’t want our manuscript ending up in the waste basket because we missed some critical command. We double space the manuscript, add the extra space between paragraphs, do the Title Page precisely how they want it, paginate, follow the rule of staples vs. paper clips, write a summary, include a short bio, any publishing credits and the SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope) so they can notify you, etc.,

At last, your submission is perfect. We’re sure to only send a copy, not the original, and with hope and pride, we take it to the post office. Now comes the hard part (how can it be harder than what we’ve already been through? you ask). With fingers crossed and with baited breath, we wait… and wait… and wait. Six months later, the day finally arrives! We receive a letter from the publisher! HUH? What is this? A form letter?

“Dear Writer:

Thank you for your manuscript submission to (publishing company). While we think your manuscript, __(your title handwritten)__ was well-written, has merit, is interesting (one is checked or underlined), it does not fit our current list.

We wish you good luck submitting your work elsewhere.

Sincerely,

(name), (title)”

Is it just me, or do all writers feel a lot more than rejected by a rejection letter?

We’ve put a hell of a lot of work, prep time, waiting time, and a lot of money into our submissions. I realize publishers are busy, and they also get hundreds of submissions, but I would think if they gave us a “heads up” as to what they ARE looking for in the last sentence of a rejection letter, it would save them time — less rejection letters to send out — and less money. There would be less in the slush pile on the floor pushed up against a wall gathering dust and waiting to be waded through by an already overworked, underpaid staff.

What is it they ARE looking for? What MIGHT fit into their present needs? Maybe we already have something really good that’s perfect… why is it that publishers don’t add one more itsy-bitsy sentence to the bottom of a rejection letter? Tell us what it is they ARE looking for that WOULD fit their current list. I’m done ranting now.
